Aidan's Day 2010 - 27th February 2010
As you may have seen on some rather fit posters around college, AIDAN'S DAY is on the 27th Feb. For those who have not done it before the event is a whole day of fun (and the bar is open in the morning to get a few cheeky drinks in the AM).
We have lined up for you:
Team games for 8 teams of 8 from 10-12
Bar and shop open all day
T-shirt and army goodies included with every ticket
Army paints
Giant inflatables
the infamous Endurance Challenge (think fear factor)
Live music all day
Raffle
Free drinks
Duck's Mr. and Mrs. Aidan's
Karaoke
And all of this for ONLY £10 or £12 for team games! Deal.
Team submissions will be opened on Wednesday at 2PM and work just like a formal table, so those of you with a raging streak of competitiveness get together now. It's your chance to prove that your sports C team is really better than the B team, your house is better than your neighbours or just that girls can beat the boys (this has yet to be demonstrated...)
Ents tickets will be on sale outside the dining hall next week, I'll let you know when.

Aidan's Halfway Prom - 11th February 2010
Some say that Valentines day is a celebration of romantic love, of mating birds or of a martyred saint. However others associate it with the mafia and Chicago gang warfare. So to avoid any misinterpretation of our intentions Services Committee brings you the first ever Aidan's prom! Proms are traditionally held at the end of the year, so we've added the word "Halfway" in a cunning fashion to avoid the chance of anyone forgetting they still have another term and a half here.
Whilst this evening won't quite have the grandeur of a full Soc Comm ball (though we're avoiding the use of coaches for good reason) its a chance to dress nice, eat well and sing some karaoke! I've even heard rumours that a fresher this year is particularly skilled at making corsages so you can go the full way to your ideal American prom. Limos won't be provided for livers out but I'll be impressed if you turn up in one.
Dress nice, grab your dates and get your tables submitted as this one is sure to sell out and will be first come first serve!

Burns Baby Burns - 28th January 2010
In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Scotland Aidan's is going celtic for an evening of pipers, haggis, ceilidhs and a chance to answer the question of what really is under a Scotsman's kilt!
To prepare you for what is sure to be a hearty tartan black tie evening here's some very quickly researched facts about Scotland:
- Scotland was made a country in 1960 with the completion of Hadrian's wall along the border, the only man-made object that can be seen from space.
- Since its completion Ben Nevis has undergone extensive building work as it was deemed "not tall enough". Work commenced in 1987 and is expected to continue until 2043 when the one-time hill will be 3 inches taller than Mount Everest.
- Robert Burns was Scotland's founder and a fiersome warrior who plagued much of northern England until he was finally placated by residents of Newcastle. They gave him a tribute of fermented grain marsh which promptly became the country's national drink.
- Bagpipes were discovered after an elaborate prank by James VI involving a room full of courtiers and a box of whoopee cusions.
- Haggis is a three legged animal adept at running up, but not down, hills due to its different length front leg. When eaten it is stuffed with onion, oatmeal, suet, deep fried mars bars and whiskey.

JCR Meeting + STV - 29th November 2009
Time for the last JCR meeting of the term, and in many ways this is the most important one so far. We have our first STV vote of the year for starters.
STV, I hear you cry? No it's not some kind of sexually transmitted skin disease. It's the process by which we elect the most important positions in college. The STV (Single Transferable Vote) is online, and it gives people a chance to vote preferentially for who they want to win. So if your favourite candidate gets knocked out of the vote, your vote is transferred to your second favourite etc. Candidates also run against the phantom candidate RON (Re-Open Nominations). I'll explain more closer to the time.
So this meeting:
Hustings for - Senior Freshers' and Open Day Rep (STV)
Elections for:
Bar Com - Resident Rep
Finance Com - Part I Rep
Finance Com - Part III Rep
IT Com - IT Assistant
IT Com - Web Assistant
Soc Com - Sponsorship Rep x2
Soc Com - Arts Rep
Sports Com - Ordinary Member x2
Welfare Com - LGBTa Rep
Environment Rep.
And a Motion For:
Creation of a Disabilities Rep on Welfare Com
Anyone who wishes to run for Senior Freshers' Rep also needs to make a manifesto, handwritten and no bigger than A1 size, to be displayed outside the dining hall both before and after the JCR meeting. For guidelines on how to produce this manifesto please see the attached document. I'm also going to put a couple of manifestos from last year outside the dining hall as examples. This needs to be submitted to me by midnight on the Sunday before the JCR meeting, so 22nd November. Any problems with this deadline please tell me.
Same as always, anyone who wants to know any more about these positions, either email me at chair@st-aidans.com or get in touch with the relevant committee head.
Cheers
Pinski

JCR Meeting FTW - 8th November 2009
You've all seen how it works, you know the format. The next JCR meeting is at 7PM on 8th November in the JCR.
This is your next chance to get involved in college life by joining a committee or voting for a motion that effects the policy of the JCR. Those of you in the bar last night saw how awesome it can be to be involved in a committee and the japes and banter that occur on socials (admittedly Bar Com take it to the extreme) next to the hard work and time put on by all committee members. So the positions going up at the next meeting are:
Arts Com - Technical Director
Arts Com - Publicity Manager
DUCK - Extraordinary Member x2
Finance Com - Financial Assistant (if the motion is passed)
Journo Com - First Year Rep
Journo Com - Liason Officer
Journo Com - Survey Officer
Services Com - Meal Rep
Services Com - Arts Rep (if the motion is passed)
Shop Com - Technical Officer (liver in)
Social Com - Secretary
Social Com - Technical Director
Welfare Com - First Year Rep
Welfare Com - Livers' Out Rep
Senior Interviewee Rep
Motions for:
Creation of, Services Com Arts Rep, Finance Com Financial Assistant, Disabilities Rep.
If you want to know more about these positions, email me at chair@st-aidans.com, talk to the relevant committee head or the person who currently holds the position.
As always, any motions you wish to put through at the next JCR meeting need to be submitted to me by midnight this Sunday 1st November.
Other than that, good luck to the rugby boys in the floodlit game at Maiden Castle tonight and bring on the Megaformal!

Acceptable in the 90s - 20th October 2009
Here it is ladies and gentlemen, not even out of freshers week and already there's the first full formal of the year to look forward to! We've chosen the theme to acknowledge the fact that this year of freshers is the first who should mostly have been born in the 90s, and reckon that's as good an excuse as any to get dressed up in silly costumes.
Chart the course of the decade you grew up in, from BritPop to Boyzone, Teletubies to Pulp Fiction and Mr Bean to MC Hammer this decade has something for everyone. There should be prizes for best costume and best table, so get going and feel free to badger Ben or Greg if you're struggling to come up with something. Afterwards we'll be having a good old rave in the JCR with Revolver DJs and raising some money for DUCK.

Fresher's Week - 5th October 2008
It is a Durham tradition to organise a full on smorgasbord of fun for your Fresher's Week. As this year’s theme is the Olympics, each night has been assigned a country which the Olympic torch passes through on its route. Your task now is to let your imaginations run wild and come up with some fit costumes for the occasion! Fancy dress may be daunting now, but you’ll soon get in the spirit of things.
You also don’t have to spend much money at all; I bet most of you have some outrageous gear kicking about in the wardrobe – or in the Rents’ wardrobe, so have a swift rummage before you come up. Alternately, Durham town has a few shops that cater for fancy dress if you want a few bits to lash on last minute. Can’t wait to see you all kitted out, I’m sure you’ll all look awesome!
