Living in Aidan’s
Aidan’s is generally regarded as one of the more down to earth and relaxed colleges. This means that there is no stereotypical Aidan’s student. Our diversity enables our students to shape their University experiences in the way that would be most beneficial and enjoyable to them.
As a first year at Aidan’s, you are without a doubt treated to some of the best accommodation in the University. Thanks to recent refurbishment, the vast majority of the rooms in college are modern and fully equipped with Wi-Fi and internet access points, a sink area and plenty of storage space. All first year students live in College in a mixture of single and shared rooms. Sharing can seem quite daunting to begin with, but the vast majority of our students enjoy the experience and recognize how central their roommate was to their experience of settling in here, providing them with a friend from day one of their university experience. The summer before arriving at college, every student is sent a form to fill in listing their interests and other personal information, so that the college can do their best to ensure that roommates have similar habits and living styles.
Second year, third year and beyond
In second year the vast majority of students rent accommodation around Durham. In your third and fourth year Aidanites are lucky enough to have the option of returning to college, allowing you to choose accommodation that’s most suited to your lifestyle. Our finalist accommodation provides state-of-the-art double bed en-suite rooms. Something to aspire to in your last year!
With regards to catering, many other colleges are jealous of the food at Aidan’s. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are provided daily in our dining hall, making meal-times extremely sociable. The food at Aidan’s consistently ranks highly in catering surveys; we are home to Durham’s only kosher kitchen and the kitchen itself has recently been fully refurbished. Despite being a fully-catered college, each corridor boasts at least one kitchen that is equipped with hobs, a microwave, two communal fridges, a toaster and a kettle. There are also vending machines and the much loved college shop in the JCR to facilitate the occasional late night snack!
